Supported Independent Living (SIL)

Supported Independent Living, often called SIL, is support for people who need help with daily living in a shared or individual home. The home, the people who live there and the support provider all matter. SIL is not the same as housing itself.

What this support may include

Daily living support; shared-living routines; personal care; meal planning; skill development; overnight support; help to participate in household and community life.

Finding the right fit

Start with the person’s goals, location, funding and practical preferences. Explain the support needed, the days and times that matter, and any accessibility, language or communication requirements. Ask more than one provider when possible so you can compare capacity, approach and costs.

Questions to ask a provider

Is there a vacancy now or expected soon? Who else lives in the home? What support is available overnight? Can you visit first? How are house rules, choices and conflicts managed?

Funding and next steps

Funding arrangements differ. If you use NDIS funding, confirm whether the provider can work with your plan-managed, self-managed or agency-managed arrangement. If you are unsure, include what you know in your request and ask the provider to explain their options clearly.
