Support workers and personal care

Support workers can assist with everyday routines, community participation and personal care. The right arrangement depends on what matters to the person: consistency, skills, language, gender preferences, timing, transport and the level of support needed.

What this support may include

Personal care; daily routines; meal preparation; community access; appointments; household tasks; social participation; overnight or short-shift support where appropriate.

Finding the right fit

Start with the person’s goals, location, funding and practical preferences. Explain the support needed, the days and times that matter, and any accessibility, language or communication requirements. Ask more than one provider when possible so you can compare capacity, approach and costs.

Questions to ask a provider

What experience does the worker have? Can you meet them before services start? How are rosters managed? How are cancellations, incidents and feedback handled?

Funding and next steps

Funding arrangements differ. If you use NDIS funding, confirm whether the provider can work with your plan-managed, self-managed or agency-managed arrangement. If you are unsure, include what you know in your request and ask the provider to explain their options clearly.
